How is the social networking race heating up? Which site will end up on top. This week we have seen some big happenings. There seems to be a new Twitter story featuring some innovative application about every 2-3 hours these days. YouTube unveiled plans this week to allow real-time video sharing and chat at the site, adding another dimension to the social arena. And finally, the disappointing earnings of MySpace’s music streaming business was not the only alarming news there. The company has announced that co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe will be leaving, and that co-founder Tom Anderson will stepping into a less demanding role.

Top Model?
20 de Abril de 2009 por Richard ShannonWhen was the last time you browsed through albums in a music store? Heck, when was the last time you were in a music store? (a real one, iTunes doesn’t count!) If you are over the age of 30, then the way you purchase and consume music has probably changed dramatically in your lifetime, but where will it all end up? Companies are experimenting with several models for peddling music online.

A Week In The Life Of Twitter
14 de Abril de 2009 por Richard ShannonTwitter must hold the record for most news appearances by a company with 40 employees or less, and the week of Easter (or as they say here in Spain Easter Week) saw more than its fair share of Twitter related stories. So, rather than pull my hair out deciding which to comment on, I’ve decided to post links to my 4 favorites. I hope to hear your comments and feel free to expand on your thoughts as there is no need to limit them to 140 characters.

The Boss Is Coming! Quick, Log Onto Facebook!!
3 de Abril de 2009 por Richard ShannonPerhaps the title of this entry is not so far-fetched. A recent study by AT&T has uncovered some interesting findings. Employees who use social networking sites and tools at work are more productive than their non-networking counterparts.

What’s Next for Search?
1 de Abril de 2009 por Richard ShannonPerhaps the party is over. According to the Nielsen Company, online advertising growth fell to single digits in the last quarter of 2007 for the first time since 2000, and economic news has been anything but rosy since then. While the time to ring the death knell has still not arrived, marketers should take a good hard look at search to see just how search advertising will evolve in the near future.

Like Apples and Oranges
21 de Marzo de 2009 por Richard ShannonLike the age-old chicken-and-egg conundrum, there are some questions that are better left pondered than answered. More and more, consumers are rethinking the Apple or PC question. While paying $300-$500 more for a fancy piece of hardware might be tempting in good times, during times of economic crisis, consumers will need to be convinced anew. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has taken it upon himself to remind us all of this (imagine that) during a webcast interview with the editor of Business Week. When asked about the 16% plummet in Apple PC sales in February, Ballmer had this to say, “The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment — same piece of hardware — paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that’s a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be.” Does Mr. Ballmer have a point?

Let Them Listen
10 de Marzo de 2009 por Richard ShannonA Wall Street Journal article from Tuesday, February 10, 2009 (New Kindle Audio Feature Causes a Stir) caught my eye recently. Kindle 1 was Amazon’s first foray into the realm of portable digital books or electronic book readers. The first version of Kindle was a runaway success, and Amazon could not keep up with demand. Now with Kindle 2, Amazon’s e.book readers will be getting a fabulous upgrade for the same price – or will they? Perhaps that upgrade will not be so fabulous after all, if the Authors Guild and some publishing companies have their way.
